A color refresh is a great way to make your highlighted/balayaged hair look more brilliant, similar to the way it looked when you initially got it done. It can take an hour or more, but the results are fantastic. Essence Salon in Mountain View, California, offers this service, which includes an OLAPLEX
treatment.
Frequency of Refreshing Highlighted/Balayaged Hair
We typically recommend getting a color refresh on highlighted/
balayaged hair every 4 - 6 weeks. Color refresh costs vary depending on your hair condition and desired look. Making an appointment in advance for this service increases the chances of getting your preferred date, time, and stylist.
How to Maintain Highlighted Hair After a Color Refresh
Maintaining highlighted hair after a color refresh takes work, but it’s worth it. It gets easier once you've developed a routine and even more so after you've had the service done more than once. Tips to keep in mind include:
- Follow the instructions of the stylist.
- Ask the stylist any questions you may have.
- Limit how often you wash your hair.
- Install a water softener at home.
- Avoid exposing your hair to the sun.
- Apply a heat-protectant product if you use heated styling tools.
- Use hair masks and treatments.
- Keep your stylist appointments.
- Avoid letting your hair come in contact with harsh chemicals, such as chlorine.
- Use a high-quality, color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
- Use a purple shampoo (for blond hair) as directed by your stylist to help maintain a fresh color.
Why Is OLAPLEX Good for a Highlighted Color Refresh?
OLAPLEX's patented formula gives extra love and TLC to your hair, including if you’re getting a color refresh. It’s one of the reasons we use it during the service. OLAPLEX offers numerous benefits, such as helping to strengthen, repair, moisturize and revitalize hair.
Can a Toner Reverse Highlights?
We can use a
toner on your highlighted hair if you wish to have the highlights darker rather than they currently are. Please let us know when you schedule an appointment if you want warmer highlights.
What Not to Do After a Color Refresh
It’s important to give the color a chance to absorb as much as possible into your hair after your appointment. Avoid doing the following after a color refresh:
- Washing your hair within the first 3 days: The longer you can wait before washing your hair, the better.
- Using styling products and heated styling tools: You should always avoid using unnecessary styling products and heated styling tools on your hair, but it’s best to avoid them altogether for at least a few days after you leave Essence Salon.
- Skipping the SPF. Yes, products with SPF are available for hair, and a high-quality SPF spray can provide extra protection.
- Going out in the sun for long periods. The sun’s rays can quickly fade your hair color, but you should especially avoid exposing your hair to the sun for at least a few days after your color refreshes.
- Swimming. Chlorine isn’t good for your refreshed hair. Skip it as often as possible, but especially during the first few days following your appointment.
